Henry VIII wanted his first marriage annulled because Katherine
of Aragon could not produce a male heir and because Anne Boleyn
was playing hard to get. His grounds for annulment in his suit
to the pope were that, in marrying his dead brother's wife
(although that marriage was never consummated), he was
committing sin and the proof of God's distaste for this
situation was Katherine's inability to produce a male heir.
The pope remained unconvinced (and more worried about the
reaction of Philip of Spain, if he allowed himself to be
convinced than he was about Henry's alleged moral dilemma).
